Tips on Installing Lift Kits for Trucks
Before you head down to the tire store to have your truck fitted with a nice set of off road tires, you definitely will want to check into having a lift kit installed. This is because if you have tires installed that are larger than your truck can accommodate, you will have problems with them rubbing on the inside of your wheel wells.
OK. So, you are now focused on getting one of them many lift kits for your truck that are easily available online but is there anything else that you have to consider before you shell out your money and commit yourself to that?
You bet there is and one of them is the legal considerations that may come into play. All states have a legal height limit on trucks and vehicles, so you will want to stay within those parameters. Sure, you can cheat but if you are in a wreck, your insurance company may have something to say to you about it.
Also, if you have a warranty on your truck you may want to see if having a truck lift kit installed voids it. Most likely it does, so this is something that you will definitely want to take into account if you are planning on purchasing an extended warranty on your new truck.
Lift kits for trucks come in all varieties, from easy to install simple lift kits, to more complex lift kits that can be a far more difficult task to install. If all that you want is some extra height to help you out on hunting trips then a more simple kit will do.
However; if you are planing on doing some more serious four wheeling, you my want to spend the extra money that is required for a more extensive lift kit that will also take much more work to install. Either way, make sure that you get a lift kit that will fit your make and model of truck.

Doing the big 3 upgrade with 2 awg wire?
Ok, I’ve beein reading things and learning about this and I am almost ready to doit soon. I was wondering since I am about to buy 0 gauge tsunami amp kit for my system if I could use some of my old jl audio power wire (2 awg) for the big 3 upgrade? I have like one long strand of it and was just planing on using that wire in all the places that needs to be upgraded. or do I need to buy 0 gague for the big 3 upgrade too, since the amp kit will be 0 awg.
Also I’m getting a tsunami 5 farad cap for my system, does anyone think this will stop my dimming lights and voltage problem? I phoned autozone for the specs on my alt and he said that my stock alt puts out 120 amps.
My system is a jl audio 1000/1 amp and a 13 w7. car is a 2004 so maybe newer models have stronger alts?
why cant my stock alt run my other electronics with that?
If you are planning on adding the 2 gauge wire to the stock wiring then that is fine. Those two wires should approximately equal a 0 gauge wire. You would typically want the wire gauge to be as thick or thicker then the wire you are using for your amp.
Are you just using the 1000/1 amp? If so then you don’t need to go as big as 0 gauge. It wouldn’t hurt but it would be a waste of money. 2 gauge is fine for 1000w RMS.
The big 3 will help your voltage problems a little bit but if you are running that much power then there is no way around upgrading your alternator.
To show you why…
1000w RMS output / 0.8 (80% efficient amp (class D)) = 1250w RMS input.
1250w / 14.4V (running voltage of car) = 87A
What that means is that it would take 87A just to run your system at 1000w RMS. That does not include what your car needs for it’s regular electrical demands. Now your amp is not going to be running at 1000w RMS all the time so your system would only demand that much power for short periods of time.
You may be able to get away with that alternator but you probably won’t. If you are already having voltage/headlight dimming issues then you are probably not going to be able to get away without upgrading your alternator.
A cap is not going to fix your headlight dimming or voltage issues. A cap will help to “stiffen” the voltage. Basically, a cap will act like a shock absorber for the voltage, like a shock absorber in your car will work for your suspension. The shock absorber will keep the voltage to your amp from jumping around suddenly. It will smooth out the fluctuations of the voltage. If your voltage is low a cap will not raise it or fix it at all.
First get the big 3 upgrade done and see if that helps you. I would save the money on the cap and get a high output alternator instead.
Good Luck!!!
